Located at a distance of 18 km from Srisailam, Akkamahadevi Caves are the best place to see in Srisailam if you are looking for some adventure. These caves is also a popular religious shrine and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Akkamahadevi Caves, located near the Krishna River,are naturally formed.

Akkamahadevi Caves present enchanting scenic beauty and tranquil environment which is combined with a bit of adventure. Although there are many naturally formed caves in the Nallamala hill ranges; Akkamahadevi caves are one of the most captivating of all. Visiting Akka Mahadevi Caves is one of the best parts of Srisailam Tourism.

As these caves are located in the forest, tourists are required to first take boat ride from Patala Ganga. which is followed by a small trek of few minutes. The boat ride to the caves is through the River Krishna; it is around 1 hour long.

A peaceful ride in the boat, with serene spread of water around you is an experience worth cherishing. It is an ideal choice if you are looking for a relaxing activity. Once the boat is anchored near the entrance of the cave, a massive, naturally formed, arch can be seen. To reach the cave, you have to walk on a tricky path for around 10 minutes.

The majestic arch which make the main entrance of the cave is around 200 x 16 x 4 feet, creating a breathtaking view. The caves are around 150 meters deep. The darkness increases as you enter Akkamahadevi Caves and walk inside. Visitors have to be careful while walking inside as the caves are devoid of any light. For light, small torches are usually used.

The width of the cave also decreases as one goes further inside. At the end of the narrow tunnel is the naturally formed Shiva lingam. The path leading to the shivalingam is also quite narrow and has a height of only 3 feet. This requires visitors to bend and crawl to reach the end of the tunnel where the holy Shivalingam is situated.

Outside the caves, there are small stalls selling snacks and tea. So after excursion, tourists can relax for sometime amid the breathtaking nature with a cup of tea.

History of Akkamahadevi Caves, Srisailam

Akkamahadevi caves have been named after Akka Mahadevi, who was a great saint and philosopher of 12th century. She is associated with Veerashaiva Bhakti movement and is said to have contributed greatly to the movement as well as to the Kannada Bhakti literature. She has done penance here in the caves. As per legend, Akkamahadevi offered prayers to the Shivalingam inside the cave.

Akkamahadevi caves are open throughout the day and night. However, to reach the caves, tourists have to travel via boat. Boating to the caves starts from 10.30 in morning, hence tourists have to plan their visit to the caves accordingly.

The best time to visit Akkamahadevi caves is from the month of November to March when the weather is slightly cooler.

How to reach Akkamahadevi Caves, Srisailam

There are two ways to reach Akkamahadevi Caves. These caves are usually visited from Patala Ganga. The ropeway center at the Haritha Hotel, near the entrance of patala ganga, offers tickets for boat rides to the caves. The starting point of the ride is located at the bottom of the hills, hence tourists have to either walk down or travel via ropeway. The ropeway tickets can also be obtained from the same ticket counter. The ropeway ride to the starting point takes less than 5 minutes.

The 16 km long boat ride from Patala Ganga to the caves take around 1 hour of time. After a pleasant ride amid the lush greenery and vast spread of calm water, boat is anchored at a point near to the caves. From there tourists have to go on foot for approximately 10 minutes of time. Although the path is clear with minimal obstructions, one has to be careful while walking as it is near to the edge.

Another way to reach Akkamahadevi Caves is via a 5 km long mud road which can be accessed from Hyderabad - Srisailam Road. Only high clearance vehicles can be driven on this mud path, which is usually inaccessible during monsoon.
